An Unexpectedly Great Family Day Out at the RAF Air Tattoo

If you've been keeping up with our previous posts, you'll know that we had a pretty busy weekend, what with throwing a Great British BBQ and having tickets to visit the RAF Fairford Air Tattoo on Saturday! I first attended the Air Tattoo when I was 4.5 months pregnant with A and absolutely loved it; I was coaxed along and didn't think I'd enjoy it (not being a huge plane enthusiast), but there's so much to do & see, that time flys by (excuse the terrible, unintended pun).

We didn't attend last year as I thought A was too young at 7 months and I was a little worried about him going this year (because it can be insanely loud for little ears) but he was completely unfazed, in fact, his ten year old brother ended up wearing his ear defenders instead. We caught the bus into Fairford and I was really nervous about being out for the whole day, and made sure I packed everything I knew we'd need the night before. A said 'oh wooow' about at least 48 times so he must've enjoyed it.

There was a group of 9 of us, 5 adults, 3 older kids and A and there was plenty for us all to do. There were attractions (my particular favourite was a miniature version of the sweeper from Wipeout where the arm spins around and the kids have to jump it, resulting in some of them getting completely wiped out!) and a great tent full of educational activities for them to do. The runway is around 4-5 miles long (at a guess) and there are stalls, games and rides all the way down, so be prepared to spend some money (especially with the older ones)! Luckily, we bought our tickets early in January, and managed to get £10+ off of the price, which I'd definitely recommend - you're bound to have a good day regardless.

So, if you're wanting to take your toddler/kids to an air show, I'd highly recommend it! The babies seemed less affected than the big kids and you can always grab a pair of ear defenders for cheap if the noise does bother them. Even if you think you'd have no interest in planes, it really is exciting to see them fly, especially the bigger and noisier ones and the displays are fantastic! So, grab your tickets at the earliest opportunity and have a fanny fantastic time!
