EFP Natural Sea Sponges

Recently, I was contacted by Ethical Family Planning and asked if I'd like to try out some of their natural sea sponges. I was curious as I've heard alot about them over the last couple of years and their multitude of uses so I gratefully accepted. A few benefits of natural (and organic) sea sponges are that they aren't treated with any bi-products or toxic substances (as synthetic sponges usually are) and are filled with completely natural enzymes making them toxin-fee and hypo-allergenic (and great for delicate skin!).

Some other beneficial qualities these sponges have are that they can hold 2 to 3 times the amount of water as a normal sponge and can last for years; sea sponges are also permeated with natural enzymes that inhibit the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria. Since using reusable nappies for the past 6 months, I've become much more interested in the eco/organic way of life, so I was excited to try out these sponges and get rid of the synthetic ones!

I was sent two packs, bleached sponges and unbleached to try out for Archie and I; the only difference is the bleaching process results in a brighter sponge making cleaning easier, while the unbleached sponges retain 100% of their natural durability and absorbency (taken from the Ethical Family Planning website).

Here are just some of the ways you can use your natural sea sponge:

  • For washing (obviously); they're great for all skin types and gently exfoliate skin.
  • As reusable tampons; they're a natural alternative to pads and tampons as they're completely organic and contain no nasty toxins, also very cost-effective.
  • For applying foundation; I've seen some rave reviews online from people that use sea sponges not only to gently remove make-up, but also apply liquid foundation.
  • & absolutely anything else you can think of using them for..

Archie has just turned 1 so still has gentle, delicate baby skin and is prone to mild eczema so I was a little nervous about trying something new on his skin, but after being reassured of their organic nature, we've used them to bathe him for the past month and I have to say, they're great at getting into and washing all of his little nooks and crannies. For a little while before using these sponges, he had some small areas of dry, rough skin around his elbows and shoulders which seem to have cleared up now (I assume it's due to the gentle exfoliating nature of the sponges). He also enjoys playing with them and squeezing the water out over his head – it keeps him entertained throughout bath time so that's a bonus!

On receiving the sponges, the first thing I found were that they are quite hard when dry, but once you rinse them through with water, they become larger and softer quite quickly. I usually use a BeautyBlender sponge to apply my make-up, but recently they've been getting stained quickly and they're certainly not the cheapest to buy, so I decided to try using a sea sponge instead. The uneven surface of the sponge makes it so much easier to apply foundation into all the creases of the face and it leaves a lovely natural, dewy finish – just rinse through thoroughly with water beforehand and squeeze out the majority of the excess before applying make-up. My skin has been lovely & soft since using them to wash with as well, so I would highly recommend for both of these purposes.

Disclosure: We were kindly sent these sea sponges by Ethical Family Planning in exchange for an open & honest review.
